Gus Solomons Jr Early Life
Gus Solomons Jr., who was born and raised in the dynamic metropolis of Cambridge, Massachusetts, had an incredibly varied background, which served as the foundation for his path into the world of dance. His undergraduate studies in architecture at the illustrious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) coincided with the beginning of his serious connection with the art of dance, which flourished throughout those years. In the midst of his academic endeavors, he found himself becoming an integral part of the regional dance ensemble known as Dance Makers.
It was during his time with Dance Makers that the foundation for his distinctive solo choreography was laid. After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture degree from MIT, he moved to the bustling hub of creation that is New York City, driven by an unquenchable urge to both perform and create dance. He has been living in New York ever since.
Gus Solomons Jr Career
In the year 1962, Solomons joined forces with other dance innovators working out of a studio in New York City. Despite the fact that the idea of deconstructing traditional dance paradigms held a great deal of appeal for him, he never wavered in his commitment to the accuracy and delicacy of technical dance. He performed with illustrious companies such as those led by Martha Graham, Pearl Lang, Donald McKayle, Joyce Trisler, and Paul Sanasardo, among others.
But it was his creative partnership with Merce Cunningham and Company, which lasted from 1965 through 1968, that had the most significant impact on this stage of his career. In 1972, Gus Solomons began a pivotal new chapter in his life by launching the Gus Solomons Company/Dance.
