Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a Guatemalan migrant accused of setting fire to a sleeping woman and then calmly watched her burn, has been identified. The defendant then told authorities he had no recollection of the attack and claimed he was intoxicated at the time.
Surveillance footage from MTA cameras apparently shows Zapeta-Calil standing in the relatively empty F train compartment, hands in his hoodie pockets, while flames consume the victim. The woman, who looked to use a walker for mobility, was sitting at the time of the incident. The frightening photographs plainly show the walker. Additional video footage appears to show Zapeta-Calil attempting to fan the flames with a T-shirt or other similar material as the fire progressed to the top of the subway car.
Authorities detained Zapeta-Calil shortly after on another subway train, where they allegedly discovered a lighter in his hands. While the motive for the attack is unknown, police sources informed The New York Post that the suspect acknowledged to being intoxicated and had no recollection of setting the woman on fire. US President-elect Donald Trump also took to his social media platform, X, to criticize the Biden administration.
“Amelia Carter, 29, was burned alive in the New York metro by an illegal from Guatemala. The police did nothing. The Bidens America does not want her image to be publicized because it is accountable for uncontrolled immigration. “New York City must be wonderful.” In a separate post, he demanded the death punishment for the culprit.
Amelia Carter, 29, appears to have been the victim of the train attack, according to widely circulated social media posts. However, authorities have yet to confirm the victim’s identification and have claimed that investigations are underway.
