Jeffrey Kanas Obituary, Death; – Authorities have officially named a U.S. Customs and Border Protection pilot who tragically lost his life this week in a helicopter crash while on duty in the remote southeastern area of San Diego County.
CBP Air Interdiction Agent Jeffrey Kanas was operating a Eurocopter AS350 when the aircraft went down under circumstances that remain unclear at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Monday in Potrero, situated north of state Route 94 and about two miles south of Barrett Lake, as reported by federal and state officials.
Kanas, the only individual aboard the single-engine light-utility helicopter, was engaged in a border-security operation at the time of the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBP spokesperson Gerrelaine Alcordo.
He had served with the agency for 16 years, as noted by CBP public affairs. The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
