An investigation has led to allegations that a Methuen police officer posted content depicting the sexual assault or exploitation of children, which have resulted in the officer being charged with child pornography.
After serving Matthew Bistany, 51, of Methuen with a search warrant on Tuesday morning, state and Methuen police detained him at his residence, where he was staying, according to a statement released by the state police.
Following receipt of a tip from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the probable upload from an IP address related to Bistany, the state police stated that they initiated the investigation “earlier this year.”
“Although Officer Bistany is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the Methuen Police Department condemns the officer’s conduct as alleged in the charging documents,” Methuen Police Chief Scott McNamara said. “While Officer Bistany is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the Methuen Police Department condemns the officer’s conduct.” “These allegations do not in any way reflect upon the character or reputation of the men and women who stand committed to protecting children and who continue to serve with distinction in the Methuen Police Department,”
On Tuesday, the defendant, Bistany, will have her initial court appearance at the district court of Lawrence. The prosecution of this case has been assigned to the office of the District Attorney for Essex County. At this juncture, it is not quite known whether or not Bistany has legal representation.
