Alland was a person who touched the lives of many through his kindness, compassion, and genuine spirit. He had a way of bringing light into every room he entered, with a smile that could brighten even the darkest of days. Alland’s generosity knew no bounds. He was always the first to lend a helping hand, ready to assist anyone in need. His selflessness and willingness to go above and beyond to make a positive difference in the lives of others exemplified his remarkable character. Whether it was through acts of kindness, words of encouragement, or his unwavering support, Alland touched the hearts of many and left an indelible mark on our lives.
He taught me the term IDM, as in intelligent dance music. My first thought, just from the title, was well this niche sub-genre/culture has to be pretentious… but he was certainly not. He was kind and humble, albeit confident in his music and style. So I dove into the sounds more intently. In 2016, after he had already moved to Berlin, I interviewed him for SF Station to preempt his performance at Housepitality in March of that year. He spoke of an unfortunate trend he could see moving in on the dance music scene… a wave of mindless, formulaic blahblahblah beginning to affect the music he loved. And he answered by pouring himself into his art with originality, precision and intentionality. That’s IDM. He truly separated himself from the rest. It really didn’t feel like he was trying to “make it” or was chasing something… he was a classically trained musician contributing quality music to the world. That was his mission. When he built something, it was built with quality, not with promo or hype. He made damn sure of it. He’s now gone way too soon. I’m truly shocked. His legacy, though—his music and the positive impact he had on others—that will last a very, very long time. I only have 5 songs downloaded on my phone, total. One of them is his. I could tell from a story he shared during our interview that he had remarkable friends around him who were ready to support him in a way most just would not unless the person was pure and special… a true friend. To those of his friends who bought him that trumpet and surprised him… it meant so much to him. It warms my heart that he had friends like you. You are missed already, Alland Byallo.
