Big Y is coming to the Westfarms mall in Farmington.

The supermarket, which will be approximately 53,000 square feet, is expected to open in the spring of 2027 on the southern side of the mall property, according to a news release from Big Y.

The “expansion marks a significant milestone in Big Y’s continued commitment to serving communities across the region with fresh, local and high-quality offerings,” the company said in the release.

“We’re thrilled to become part of the vibrant Westfarms community after a long search for the right opportunity,” said Mathieu L. D’Amour, vice president of real estate and development for Big Y. “This new location will deepen our connection with customers in Central Connecticut and allow us to continue delivering our signature customer service through our exceptional and knowledgeable employees.”

More details, including hiring opportunities and grand opening events, are expected to be released in the coming months.

Big Y Foods, Inc., which operates 94 locations throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, is one of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England.

Big Y was founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour, the store was named after an intersection in Chicopee, Massachusetts where two roads converge to form a “Y”.

“At Westfarms, we take pride in serving Connecticut as a premier retail shopping destination with exceptional brands and experiences,” Westfarms General Manager Elizabeth Ryan said in a statement to the Courant. “We’re thrilled to add Big Y to our Westfarms community and eagerly anticipate its grand opening.”
