Doug Halliday, a dedicated leader in sports development and a talented artist, made an indelible mark on the Newfoundland and Labrador community before his untimely passing. As the Sport for Life Project Coordinator at Sport NL, Doug’s influence was felt across the province, where his commitment to fostering healthy communities through sport was nothing short of inspiring.
Born with a deep passion for both athletic development and creative expression, Doug’s life was a beautiful blend of these two worlds. His journey as a coach and leader started long before he took on his pivotal role with Sport NL in 2018. He had already built a solid foundation of experience, serving as the Technical Director for the Pearlgate Track and Field Club and as the Leadership and Training Coordinator for the City of St. John’s.
Doug’s work was always focused on building capacity in others, whether it was developing athletes or empowering fellow coaches. Doug’s professional background in kinesiology—having earned his Bachelor of Kinesiology degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland—was a cornerstone of his approach to sports development.
It was not just about physical performance for Doug; it was about building confidence, encouraging lifelong participation in sports, and inspiring a love of movement that could be passed on for generations. However, Doug’s influence stretched far beyond the realm of sport. He was also a gifted artist, with a creative soul that led him to express himself through various forms of art.
His artwork, displayed in Conception Bay South, NL, was a testament to his vibrant and colorful personality, and many who knew him were inspired by the way he brought life and emotion to his canvas. Doug’s dedication to others was equally matched by his personal courage. Diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal cancer in December 2022, Doug faced his illness with the same strength and resilience that he applied to every challenge in life.
Throughout his battle, he remained an inspiration to all who knew him, showing an unwavering positivity and a commitment to living life fully. Doug’s passing leaves a void in the lives of those who were touched by his kindness, passion, and exceptional talents. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire future generations—both through his work in sports and his artistic contributions. Doug Halliday’s story is a reminder of the power of perseverance, the importance of nurturing others, and the beauty of living life with purpose and creativity.
