Melody Burns, a former local radio host, Second Amendment rally organizer, and long-time veterans advocate, passed away this past week after a three-year battle with illness. Burns was known for her work as a host on Talk 1300 from around 2012 to 2014, where she consistently ran an afternoon program.
Burns was also actively involved in organizing rallies, including those opposing the state’s SAFE Act and other gun control measures. Additionally, she organized a pro-police rally at the Capitol following the tragic death of George Floyd in 2020.
In recognition of her efforts, Burns was honored as Albany County Citizen of the Month in 2016, notably for her successful holiday card campaign for troops, which resulted in 150,000 cards being distributed.
Despite battling recurrent cancer, Burns continued her community work, including organizing Memorial Day flag placements at Cavalry Cemetery in Bethlehem. She also managed a limited liability corporation, Melody D. Burns, Idea Practitioner, based in Bethlehem.
Originally from Ogdensburg, Burns began her career at Talk 1300 in 2009. Her show “Women IN” focused on empowering women to overcome barriers and was broadcast on Fridays.
Colleague Paul Vandenburgh recalled Burns as a private individual who, despite her own health challenges, was a source of encouragement when he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. Her own battle with cancer began in 2012 and included the loss of her husband, Victor Olivett, to stage 4 lung cancer in 2019. Burns was diagnosed with vulvar cancer in 2021 and shared her journey openly, urging early screening and awareness.
Burns continued to speak out about her experiences and remained active in her advocacy until her recent need for hospice care. She was remembered fondly for her dedication and impact, including her involvement with Patriot Honor Flight, which honored Vietnam veterans with trips to Washington, D.C.
Details about memorial arrangements for Melody Burns will be shared in the near future.
