Monique Gilbertson Obituary, Death – Karen Mraz, 77, of Columbiana, lost her life in a tragic car accident late Friday morning, November 15, 2024, in Beaver Township, Ohio. She was a passenger in a 2020 Buick SUV involved in the crash.
The accident occurred around 11:15 a.m. on the Market Street extension near State Route 7 and W. Middletown Road. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the vehicle’s male driver lost control, veered off the road, and struck a steel utility pole. The collision caused the car to ignite in flames.
Beaver Township Fire Chief Larry Sauerwein, who happened to be nearby, rushed to the scene along with his son and other bystanders in an attempt to rescue the occupants. Despite their efforts, Mraz was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Both occupants were reportedly wearing seat belts, and authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The road was closed for over an hour as emergency personnel and investigators worked at the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
