A tragic single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 32-year-old Merrill man early Wednesday morning in the town of Scott, Lincoln County. Authorities have identified the deceased as Ryan P. Adams, who was driving the utility terrain vehicle (UTV) when it rolled over, leaving his passenger critically injured.
The crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Scott Road, just south of Heldt Street. According to reports from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, a 911 caller alerted emergency responders to the scene. Upon arrival, responders found the UTV overturned in a ditch after what appeared to be a high-speed loss of control.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Adams was traveling southbound when he veered off the roadway, causing the UTV to leave the pavement and roll over. The force of the accident resulted in Adams’ death at the scene, while his passenger, a 40-year-old man whose identity has not been disclosed, was ejected from the vehicle. The passenger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Medivac Air 2 to a nearby hospital for emergency care.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies collaborated on the scene. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department led the investigation, with critical assistance from the Merrill Fire Department, Merrill Police Department, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The Lincoln County Coroner also provided support, confirming Adams’ death.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash but noted that weather conditions, vehicle speed, and potential impairment are likely factors under review. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is assisting in assessing whether the UTV complied with state regulations regarding safety equipment and operational standards.
Local officials have expressed concern over the increasing number of UTV-related incidents in the region. They remind the public about the importance of using safety measures, such as helmets and seatbelts, when operating such vehicles. The tragedy also serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with nighttime driving on rural roads, where visibility and road conditions can be challenging.
Ryan P. Adams, described by acquaintances as a hard-working individual and an active community member, leaves behind family and friends who are grappling with the sudden loss.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. Meanwhile, community members are mourning the loss and hoping for the recovery of the injured passenger.
This incident highlights the need for continued public awareness regarding UTV safety and adherence to operational guidelines, as such accidents continue to take a toll on lives and families in rural communities.
