Officer Michael Silver died unexpectedly on Tuesday, and the Pittsfield Police Department and the larger Berkshire County community are in sorrow.
Since joining the Pittsfield Police Department in 2008, Officer Silver has devoted his life to upholding the law. He joined the force after completing the State Police Municipal Academy and immediately gained regard for his professionalism, dedication, and talent.
Officer Silver made a substantial contribution to the community and public safety over his 16-year tenure. He became a Senior Tactical Operator on the Berkshire County Special Response Team in 2016, playing a key role in the department’s Traffic Unit.
His varied law enforcement background was further enhanced by his brief 2015 stint with the Lee Police Department. He demonstrated his commitment to enhancing his fellow officers’ abilities by obtaining numerous qualifications as an MPTC Instructor in a variety of fields.
In addition, Officer Silver received other awards for his outstanding service, including the coveted Drug Buster award and a Weapons Seizure honor. He was well respected by both his coworkers and the community because of his obvious enthusiasm for both his career and his town.
Law enforcement personnel from all around the area, including the Massachusetts State Police, the Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office, the Pittsfield Police Department, and SWAT teams, honored Officer Silver on Tuesday afternoon by going with him home from the Westfield medical examiner’s office. Law officers, fire departments, emergency medical services, and community members lined the streets and overpasses to offer their last respects in a heartfelt show of solidarity.
