Ray Barnett, the founder of the African Children’s Choir, was born on September 26, 1936, and he passed away on September 2, 2024, according to a statement that was released to break the news of his passing.
During the course of his life, Ray had an influence and inspired thousands of people, who have in turn made a difference in the lives of thousands more. In our hearts, the ACC family will always hold Ray in the highest regard. All of us adore you, Ray.
Ray Barnett was on his way to Uganda for humanitarian reasons when he took a young child from his destroyed house to the safety of another community forty years ago. He was doing this for the purpose of delivering aid to the people of Uganda.
During the trip, the young boy did what he was most skilled at doing: he sang. That simple song of dignity and hope was the impetus for the beginning of a program that has had a profound impact on the lives of thousands of young people and fundamentally altered the trajectory of the future of the African continent.
Ray possessed an innate awareness that looking at dark pictures would cause people to feel uneasy and exhausted because of the experience. Knowing that the only way to truly become motivated was to recognize the beauty and potential that lay hidden beneath the gloom and misery was something that he was well aware of.
Ray came to the conclusion that he would try something different. Eventually, he came to the realization that the key to attracting people’s attention was to personally introduce them to the children so that they could hear their voices and the message of hope that they were trying to convey.
Through a variety of relief and development initiatives, he was the driving force behind Music for Life, a charitable organization that raised funds to support the education and hope of thousands of children who were living in poverty. In addition, he established the African Children’s Choir in the year 1984.
