Noelia Gomez Death: The University of Delaware community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Noelia Gomez, an 18-year-old student from Clark, New Jersey, who was tragically killed in an accident involving a speeding motorcycle. Gomez, who had just begun her first semester at the university, was studying business management and accounting. The fatal accident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 11:53 p.m. near the Trabant University Center, where Gomez was crossing the street. According to Newark Police Department spokesperson Lt. Andrew Rubin, the incident unfolded after a University of Delaware police officer attempted to stop a motorcycle resembling a sportbike for a traffic violation near Main Street and South Chapel Street.
The motorcyclist, instead of stopping, accelerated westward on East Main Street, ignoring the officer’s emergency lights. The officer, in accordance with department protocol, did not pursue the motorcycle after it sped away. Tragically, as the motorcycle raced down the street, it struck Gomez while she was crossing. The rider then lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into four people walking on the sidewalk and a nearby light pole. Despite witnesses’ desperate attempts to save her, Gomez died at the scene.
The news of Gomez’s death has left the University of Delaware community in shock and deep sorrow. In a message to students, UD President Dennis Assanis expressed his condolences, stating, “Scenes like these are unimaginably tragic. The tragic loss of one of our own has left us all incredibly rattled, and we cannot say enough how sorry we are for the family, friends, and larger community. Today, our hearts feel incredibly heavy.” The accident also resulted in injuries to four individuals who were on the sidewalk at the time. Only one of them required hospitalization for minor injuries, while the motorcycle rider was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Newark Police Department is continuing its investigation into the accident. As of now, no charges have been filed. Sgt. Joseph Conover, another spokesperson for the department, explained that charges in traffic-related incidents can take time to process. The case is being reviewed in consultation with the attorney general’s office before any potential arrests are made. In the wake of this tragic event, the University of Delaware is providing counseling services to students affected by the incident. The community is encouraged to seek support and to lean on one another during this difficult time. Anyone with information about the accident is urged to contact Master Cpl.
