WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ FBI claims to have apprehended a 63-year-old Texan on suspicion of involvement in the January 6, 2021, breach of the United States Capitol. Michael Marroquin was taken into custody on July 27 in his hometown of Nederland, Texas. The 63-year-old faces criminal charges for obstructing a judicial or administrative action. Marroquin is also facing multiple misdemeanor charges, including: entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; entering and staying on the floor of Congress; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; impeding passage through the Capitol grounds or buildings; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in any of the Capitol buildings. On January 6, 2021, Marroquin left his residence in Jefferson County and made the trip to Washington, DC, to participate in a rally, as evidenced by court filings.
The FBI reports that after the event, Maroquin and a group of other people marched to the Capitol building and entered through the Senate wing door at around 1:20 p.m. The authorities claim that Marroquin filmed and photographed his exploits in the nation’s capital on multiple occasions. I have some news for you. You’ve got me under custody, but this is our House! No! You will never accept our… We’ve broken our silence, you hear us? In one of the recordings, Marroquin can be heard yelling as he supposedly approaches the Crypt.
According to the FBI, Marroquin can be heard shouting “Keep moving!” as the throng approaches a line of officers in another video. Another video, according to the court records, was shot from outside the House Chamber and shows law enforcement officers with their firearms drawn and pointed back at the camera. Marroquin is accused of trying to strike up a discussion with the police officer before yelling, “You’re a traitor!” According to their research, Marroquin departed the Capitol building at approximately 2:31 p.m.
The FBI stated in part of a press statement that “his actions, along with the actions of others, disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the presidential election.” More than 350 people have been charged with assaulting or obstructing law police, and the FBI reports that over 1,069 people have been arrested in virtually all 50 states for crimes relating to the breach of the U.S. Capitol. The probe is still in progress.
