Luke Welch Death, Obituary – Luke Welch, a vibrant and beloved member of the Urbandale community, passed away on August 12, 2024, at the age of 26. Born on May 26, 1998, in Petrozavodsk, Russia, Luke’s journey from his homeland to becoming an integral part of an American family is a testament to his unique and inspiring story. Luke’s journey to the United States began with Camp Hope in 2006, where he was one of the older, adoptable children welcomed for a special week-long summer camp.
During this transformative experience, he was hosted by Dick and Sharon Jones. It was here that he met Jennifer and Eric Welch, who were immediately taken by Luke’s infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy. The connection was undeniable, and by the end of that week, Jennifer and Eric knew that Luke was meant to be a part of their family. Luke’s arrival in America on December 2, 2006, marked the beginning of a new chapter, as he became a beloved son and brother in the Welch family, joining his new sister Jozy.
Growing up in Urbandale, Luke attended Woodward Granger schools where he excelled both academically and athletically. A proud graduate of the class of 2017, Luke pursued further education in the tool and die program at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). His dedication and skill led him to a successful career as a machinist with Accumold in Ankeny, where he worked diligently for seven years.
Luke’s personality was characterized by a deep love for the outdoors and an unwavering zest for life. Whether it was boating, swimming, or snowboarding, he embraced every moment with joy. He cherished family outings, especially deer hunting in the fall with his dad and uncle Jason, and enjoyed mini-golf and other activities with his loved ones.
His bond with his dogs, Ozzy and Sage, was a reflection of his affection for animals, and his favorite memories included time spent at the lake with his cousins and grandparents. The summer trips with Grandma and Grandpa Welch, especially their visit to Disney World, hold a special place in his heart. Luke was not only a devoted family member but also a steadfast friend. His camaraderie and cheerful spirit made him a cherished companion, and his friends will remember him fondly for the times they spent together, sharing laughter and adventures.
Luke is survived by his parents, Eric and Jennifer Welch; his sister Jozy (Ben) Murry; grandparents Carroll and Eileen McLuckie; and grandmother Colleen Welch. He is also remembered by his nephew Joshua Murry; uncles Jason (Kay) Welch and Greg (Cheryl) McLuckie; aunt Tammy McLuckie; and cousins Derrick, Alex (Olivia), Ashley (Michael) Meyer, Zoe, Shawn, and Tally.
