Israel Matos-Colon Obituary, – 22-year-old David Phillips Jr. has been sentenced by Judge Bryan Meismer to serve a term of two to 20 years in prison for the killing of his co-worker in March of 2023. Phillips Jr. has been credited with 509 days served, making him immediately eligible for parole. He was acquitted of charges related to possession of a stolen firearm and use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.
The incident occurred near a cell tower in Cedar County, where Phillips shot 31-year-old Israel Matos-Colon multiple times. Phillips claimed that the shooting was an act of self-defense. Initially facing charges of second-degree murder, use of a deadly firearm, and possession of a stolen firearm, Phillips was found not guilty of the firearm charges and the murder charge was reduced to manslaughter.
