It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alistair Shields, our esteemed former STO Convenor for the SASA East District, who departed from us on July 9, 2024. Alistair’s unwavering dedication and passion for swimming officiating have left an indelible mark within our community.
A Lifelong Commitment to Swimming
Alistair’s journey with the SASA East District began in 1996 when he was encouraged to take a timekeeping course with the casual advice, “You are only working a stopwatch, don’t worry about it.” This initial step ignited a lifelong passion for the sport. Alistair’s enthusiasm and determination drove him to complete his judging course in 1998 under the rigorous exam-based system. His pursuit of excellence led him to pass the recorders exam and qualify as a referee in 2009.
Dedicated Service and Leadership
Throughout his career, Alistair was a familiar and respected figure at club, Lothian Region, District, and National swimming events. His steadfast dedication and support for the swimming community were evident through his consistent presence and active involvement. In 2013, Alistair assumed the role of East District STO Convenor, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing significant changes and ensuring the effective training of young volunteers. His efforts made officiating more accessible and appealing, nurturing a new generation of committed officials.
Beyond Officiating: Mentorship and Inspiration
Alistair’s impact extended beyond his official duties. He was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to many within the swimming community. His dedication to guiding and nurturing young volunteers will be remembered with deep appreciation and gratitude.
In Memoriam
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Alistair’s family and friends during this challenging time. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we uphold the standards of excellence he established, and strive to foster the same passion and dedication he embodied in the sport.
