Sonya Massey Obituary – The woman who was shot and killed during a deputy-involved shooting in Springfield on July 6 has been identified by Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, as Sonya Massey, 36 years old.
At 12:50 a.m., the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting a prowler at a residence in the 2800 block of Hoover Ave. Two deputies arrived at the scene and conducted a search, during which shots were fired, resulting in Massey being struck by gunfire.
Massey was transported by EMS from her residence on South Hoover Avenue to HSHS St. John’s Hospital’s emergency room, where she was pronounced deceased at 1:47 a.m. An autopsy conducted on Monday revealed that Massey died from a gunshot wound.
The investigation into Massey’s death is ongoing and being handled by the Illinois State Police and the Sangamon County Coroner.
