Sonia Christina Vega, a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on July 2, 2024, at the age of 39 and a half. Born on December 29, 1984, in Secaucus, NJ, to Mariano Vega Jr. and Sonia Ivette Zayas Vega, Sonia was known for her kindness, compassion, and legendary laugh. Her sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and community.
Sonia, affectionately known by various names such as Christina, Titi Chrissy, and Miss Chrissy, leaves behind her cherished siblings: her favorite older sister Vanessa Vega and her favorite younger brother Mariano Vega III. She is also survived by their spouses, Jeffrey David Coots and Denise Alves Araujo, whom she loved dearly. Sonia was a devoted aunt to her nieces, Paloma Irene CootsVega, 10, and Magnolia Luz CootsVega, 8, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of her nephew, expected in October 2024. Her family was her pride and joy, and she held each member close to her heart.
Sonia was a remarkable individual with diverse talents and interests. A level 1 Black belt in tae kwon do, she demonstrated discipline and dedication in all she pursued. She was an exceptionally talented dancer, mastering various styles including ballet, jazz, West African, tap, pointe, salsa/merengue, hip-hop, and belly dancing. Her love for music extended to her commitment as a piano student under Miss Kauro. An avid skier, Sonia enjoyed the thrill of the slopes and was known for her expertise and lifelong passion for skiing.
Her linguistic abilities were impressive, as she was fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Sonia’s love for travel took her around the world, where she embraced different cultures and made lasting memories. Professionally, she was a dependable and talented therapy assistant, known for her dedication to helping others. At Sensory Kids & Social Minds, she was a sentinel on the Pedestrian Plaza, always alert and caring for her colleagues and the children.
Sonia’s unique ability to express love through acts of kindness made her a beloved figure among family and friends. Despite being limited in her expressive communication, she conveyed her affection through thoughtful gifts, deep hugs, and committed acts of service. Her generosity and warmth touched everyone she encountered, and her presence brought joy and comfort to many lives.
Her family and friends fondly remember her love for spending time in Jersey City, the Catskills, and Puerto Rico. These locations were not just places but held memories of laughter, bonding, and cherished moments. Sonia’s adventurous spirit and love for life were evident in her actions and the relationships she nurtured.
Sonia’s unexpected passing has left her community mourning a significant loss. She was not only a pillar of strength for her family but also a beacon of hope and kindness for all who knew her. Her ability to bring people together and her relentless support for her loved ones will be remembered and cherished forever.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, July 6, from 6-10 pm at Riotto Funeral Home, 3205 JFK Blvd., Jersey City, NJ 07306. Friends, family, and those whose lives she touched are invited to pay their respects and celebrate her life. Sonia was a true philanthropist, dedicating her life to helping others.
