ATLANTA (ABC4) — Earlier this year, the Sundance Film Festival announced that it is exploring different locations to take the beloved festival. Several cities have submitted a bid to host the festival — and one of the latest spots to throw their hat in the ring is the city of Atlanta.
On Monday, June 24, the city of Atlanta announced that it has submitted a Request for Proposal to the Sundance Institute as a potential host of the film festival as early as 2027.
The city, along with its partners, have pledged $2 million to support the festival, and created a website proposing why Atlanta should be chosen.
“We are honored that Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the Sundance Film Festival in 2027 and beyond. Atlanta is where the worlds of film, entertainment, economic development, diversity and inclusion meet and grow cohesively, together,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “We’re ready to show the Sundance Institute that Atlanta is the place where opportunities are endless, and Sundance can continue to shine.”
The festival’s current contract with Park City expires in 2027. The Sundance Institute says that looking at new locations allows them to “evaluate, consider, and build.”
According to Forbes, 15 cities have bid to be the new location for the Sundance Film Festival.
Park City, which has been the home of the Sundance Film Festival for 40 years, isn’t completely out of the question, either. The Utah Film Commission also announced a bid to continue the festival in the Beehive State.
A final decision is expected to be made at the end of this year or the beginning of 2025.
