Jacob Alonzo Obituary, Death; – The Lubbock Police Department has provided updated information regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during a domestic disturbance. The individual who lost their life has been identified as Jacob Alonzo, aged 38.
According to LPD, officers were initially dispatched to the 3000 block of Valencia Avenue at 8:37 p.m. in response to a domestic disturbance call. Fortunately, no officers sustained any injuries during the incident. Police reports indicate that the call involved an intoxicated man who was causing property damage inside a residence by swinging a bat. The person who contacted the police sought refuge in a bathroom along with three children.
Upon arrival at the scene, two officers encountered Alonzo outside the residence. LPD states that Alonzo proceeded to strike a vehicle that was occupied with a pickaxe. Despite repeated commands from the officer to cease his actions and the officer’s attempt to retreat, Alonzo refused to drop the axe. Consequently, the officer discharged his firearm. Even after being shot, Alonzo continued to advance towards the officer and eventually threw the pickaxe at him.
Immediate life-saving measures were initiated by the officers present, and emergency medical services were summoned. Unfortunately, Alonzo was pronounced deceased. LPD’s forensic investigation unit and the office of professional standards have been deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. The officer involved in the incident has been a member of LPD since February 2023 and is currently on administrative leave, in accordance with government policy.
