A Bridgeport man has been sentenced to four decades behind bars for his role in a 2020 fatal shooting that killed a Stamford woman, officials said.

Ian Evans, 33, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by a jury in Stamford Superior Court on Friday, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice.

The sentencing comes after Evans was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, first-degree assault, and criminal use of a firearm on Oct. 1, the state’s attorneys office said. The ruling came after a previous jury found Evans not guilty of first-degree murder.

Evidence presented at trial showed Evans fatally shot Shernetta Dunmore, 35, of Stamford, while at an end-of-summer party on Sept. 20, 2020. According to officials, Dunmore was at a block party in a parking lot on Ursula Place in Stamford when a barrage of gunfire went off. Though Dunmore was not the target of the shooting, she was struck by multiple bullets before she collapsed. Dunmore was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

“Video surveillance near the parking lot captured the defendant firing multiple shots in the direction of Ms. Dunmore, ultimately striking and killing her. The defendant also fired multiple shots at a second victim, striking and wounding him,” according to a statement.
