USM football player dies in overnight shooting; investigation ongoing Following his tragic death, Head Coach Will Hall and some of Daniels’ teammates shared their thoughts on losing the player known for his infectious smile. “MJ was always smiling, that’s just who he was,” teammate Dylan Lawrence recalls.
“He was a great guy, always with a smile on his face,” teammate Micheal Caraway adds. “His smile was beautiful, and he never failed to brighten your day,” Hall reflects. MJ Daniels was not only a valued teammate but also a close friend to many.
“He was someone you could always count on, no matter what,” teammate Elijah Sabbatini says. “Since day one on campus, he was my guy. We were inseparable, always there for each other.”
While the team mourns the loss, they are determined to honor MJ in the upcoming season. “Losing our brother has brought us closer together,” teammate Rodrigues “Dreke” Clark explains. “We understand the importance of brotherhood and the reality of losing someone suddenly. We’re united in our goal to win the championship for him.”
“It has united us as a team. We have a purpose now, and it’s all for #11,” Caraway adds. “MJ always aimed to be the best,” teammate Hayes Puckett shares. “He dreamed of winning a conference championship, so it’s only fitting that we give our all to achieve that in his memory.”
Despite the tragedy, practices have continued without pause. “We kept going for a few reasons,” Hall states. “Firstly, MJ wouldn’t have wanted us to stop, and secondly, it would go against everything we teach these young men about perseverance in the face of adversity.”
