Alex Segal Obituary – The family of the teenager who tragically lost his life after being hit by a train in Sorrento Valley on Friday has confirmed his identity. NBC 7 interviewed the uncle of the teenager, who revealed that the young boy was Alex Segal and that they laid him to rest over the weekend. The incident took place when Segal, riding his bicycle, attempted to cross the train tracks and was struck by an oncoming train.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal accident occurred after a northbound train had passed, and the 17-year-old boy crossed the tracks on his bike, unaware of the southbound train approaching. Fortunately, the other two teens with him were unharmed. Alex was a student at Torrey Pines High School and was part of the junior varsity soccer team, as stated on the school’s website.
Principal Rob Coppo expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the student in an email to Torrey Pines families, emphasizing the need to respect the family’s privacy during this challenging time. Matt Derkrikorian, a Trauma Program Manager at Rady Children’s Hospital, highlighted that bike and ebike accidents are common causes of injuries treated during the summer.
Nancy Sheehan-McCulloch, an executive director with the California Operation Lifesaver, pointed out that California has the highest number of fatalities related to train incidents in the United States, emphasizing the importance of safety around train tracks. A memorial has been set up to honor the memory of the 17-year-old.
