Eric Coughlin, Micayla Coughlin Obituary – Micayla and Eric Coughlin, along with their young daughters, were present at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills on Saturday for a brief period when a gunman arrived in a vehicle and discharged at least 28 rounds at the families gathered there. The Coughlins had just purchased ice cream, as stated on a GoFundMe page established for them by a family friend. Upon hearing the gunshots, they shielded their daughters, aged 2 and 7 months, from harm. Their efforts were successful.
However, the Coughlins were shot a total of 7 times during the incident and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital, according to the GoFundMe account managed by family friend Noel Wakul. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office verified the GoFundMe account.
The Coughlins were among 9 individuals shot by the assailant, identified by law enforcement as Michael William Nash, 42, of Shelby Township. The situation was described as chaotic, with people attempting to flee, falling, and being struck by bullets; ice cream cones and flip flops were stained with blood.
Authorities reported that other victims included an 8-year-old boy in critical condition with a head wound and a 4-year-old boy in stable condition with a thigh wound. A 39-year-old woman shot in the abdomen and leg was also in critical condition.
The tragic incident at the Rochester Hills splash pad was one of three mass shootings that took place in Michigan on Saturday, all within metro Detroit. In Lathrup Village, 6 individuals were shot at a house party shortly after midnight on Friday, with two in critical condition. In Detroit, a woman was killed and four others were shot late Saturday night. The victims in both incidents were teenagers and young adults.
“We’re becoming far too accustomed to this,” remarked Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter during a press conference on Sunday.
The events of Saturday were described by Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett as a “nightmare.” He expressed disbelief at seeing his city associated with others that have faced mass shootings.
