WILMINGTON, NC — Patricia Thomas Whittington, a beloved member of the Wilmington community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the age of 73. Patricia, known affectionately as “Pat” by friends and family, left behind a legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to her family and community.
Born on October 8, 1950, in Wilmington, Patricia was the daughter of the late Samuel and Martha Thomas. She grew up in a close-knit family and was known for her kind heart and generous spirit from a young age. Patricia graduated from New Hanover High School in 1968, where she was an active member of the student council and the debate team. She went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, earning a degree in Education in 1972.
Patricia dedicated her professional life to teaching, a passion that defined her for over four decades. She began her teaching career at Pine Valley Elementary School, where she taught third grade for 25 years. Patricia was known for her innovative teaching methods and her ability to inspire and nurture her students. Her classroom was a place where children felt valued and encouraged to reach their full potential. She retired in 2017, leaving behind a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues.
In addition to her career in education, Patricia was deeply involved in her community. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Wilmington, where she served in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher and choir member. Patricia also volunteered at the local food bank and was a passionate advocate for children’s literacy programs. Her commitment to service was recognized in 2015 when she received the Wilmington Community Service Award.
Patricia married her high school sweetheart, John Whittington, in 1974. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Together, they raised three children: Michael, Susan, and James. Patricia was a devoted wife and mother, known for her unwavering support and love for her family. Her grandchildren, whom she adored, brought immense joy to her life. She often shared stories of their accomplishments and cherished the time spent with them.
Friends and family remember Patricia for her warm smile, her infectious laughter, and her ability to make everyone she met feel special. She had a talent for gardening and enjoyed spending her weekends tending to her flower beds and vegetable garden. Patricia also loved to read, and her home was filled with books of all genres. She was an avid supporter of the local library and often donated books to support its programs.
A celebration of Patricia’s life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Wilmington, with Pastor David Jenkins officiating. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the New Hanover County Public Library in Patricia’s memory.
Patricia Thomas Whittington will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the entire Wilmington community. Her legacy of love, education, and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.
