A tragic accident claimed the life of a five-month-old baby boy and left his parents injured when their motorcycle collided with another motorcycle along the national highway in Barangay Kalunasan, Calape town, Bohol. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2024. According to an investigation by the Calape Police Station, the infant’s 21-year-old mother was driving a Honda Click motorcycle while her live-in partner held the baby at the back.
When the accident occurred, the family was traveling from Inabanga town to Tagbilaran City. Eyewitnesses reported that the mother attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided head-on with a Suzuki Smash motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The impact caused a collision with a nearby tricycle, exacerbating the accident’s severity. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, and the victims were rushed to the Calape Mother and Child Hospital.
Tragically, the baby was declared dead on arrival. The parents were in critical condition and were referred to a hospital in Tagbilaran City for further medical treatment. Witnesses and first responders described the scene as harrowing, with both motorcycles and the tricycle severely damaged. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances leading up to the collision. Preliminary findings suggest that the mother’s attempt to overtake another vehicle on a busy highway may have played a significant role in the accident.
The Calape Police Station urges anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed the accident to come forward to aid in the investigation. They also remind motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when overtaking on national highways, to prevent such tragic incidents. This accident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with road travel and the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users. The community is mourning the loss of the infant, and thoughts are with the injured parents as they receive medical care.
