The crash happened around 1:10 p.m. at the intersection of East Michigan Avenue and Lima Center Road. The plane’s instructor, a 46-year-old man from Dearborn, was killed, while a 22-year-old University of Michigan student from North Carolina was injured and airlifted to University Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Multiple emergency responders, including the Michigan State Police, local fire and ambulance services, and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, attended the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will investigate the crash, with NTSB investigators expected to arrive on Tuesday morning. The public has been asked to avoid the crash site.
Witness Ken Krause, who lives nearby, saw the plane at about 1,000 feet in the air and noted the absence of engine noise before it nosedived. He immediately called 911, and other bystanders, including schoolteachers, confirmed the pilot was still breathing when they reached the crash site. The plane, manufactured in 1975 and registered to Silvered Wings LLC in Howell, Michigan, had its wings and tail intact, but its front was heavily damaged from the impact.
