A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when a 75-year-old man, Dennis Wasuli of Anchorage, died in a collision on the Seward Highway near Ingram Creek on the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska State Troopers reported that Wasuli was driving northbound in a Chevrolet S-10 when, for reasons yet unknown, he crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. His vehicle collided with another pickup truck towing an RV.
Wasuli was pronounced dead at the scene, and the occupants of the other pickup truck, a driver and a passenger, were transported to an Anchorage hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Troopers spokesperson Justin Freeman stated that road conditions were normal at the time of the collision, and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor. The highway had to be closed for approximately six hours to investigate and clear the scene.
The community is left mourning the loss of Wasuli, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing. Troopers are working to determine why Wasuli crossed into oncoming traffic, but the exact cause remains unclear.
As investigators continue their work, they will gather evidence and interview witnesses to piece together the events leading up to this tragic accident. The closure of the highway underscores the severity of the incident and the need for a thorough investigation to prevent future accidents.
