An incarcerated woman managed to escape from a hospital in New London while she was being treated early Monday morning, officials from the Connecticut Department of Correction said.

An incarcerated woman, identified as 39-year-old Nicole Besse of Waterbury, was being treated at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London when she was reportedly able to slip out of her wrist restraints and leave the hospital grounds around 4 a.m. on Monday, according to officials.

Besse was last seen leaving the hospital in a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans, officials said.

K-9 Units from the Connecticut State Police and Department of Correction were searching the area looking for Besse. Additionally, members of the Department of Correction’s Fugitive Investigations Unit and Security Division were onsite and working to locate her, according to officials.

“If you spot the individual, do not approach or follow her,” officials said. “Call 911 immediately.”

According to the DOC, Besse last entered the correctional system on Feb. 19 and was being held at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic on a first-degree failure to appear charge. She had been assigned a $6,000 bond and was awaiting a court date.

Court records show she has a number of previous convictions that include first-degree escape, interfering with an officer/resisting, failure to appear and violation of probation.
