A correctional officer with the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office has been named as the victim of the crash that occurred on Monday, west of Mattoon. Officer Jennie Ashley, 47, was identified by Sheriff Dustin Heuerman to WCIA as the victim of the collision near Western Avenue and Dole Road.
He added that at the time of the collision, Ashley was not on duty.Heuerman revealed in a press statement that although Ashley joined the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office in September 2023, she had years of prior correctional experience. “with a brief period of time, I worked as a Correctional Officer with the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
Heuerman stated that Officer Ashley established quick rapport with her coworkers and even assisted in serving as a mentor to some who were just starting out in the field. “Officer Ashley established a connection with the prisoners with whom she dealt, frequently demonstrating empathy throughout those exchanges. Her absence will be felt deeply. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office uniformed divisions will wear mourning bands on their badges until Ashley’s funeral is over out of respect.
