A Peruvian national previously deported following a burglary conviction has been sentenced to six months in prison after his sexual assault arrest alerted authorities that he had illegally come back into the country.
Christian Maximo Castaneda Negrete, 47, faced sentencing on Wednesday in federal court in New Haven, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut.
Federal authorities said Castaneda Negrete was admitted into the country in July 2001 on a nonimmigrant visa that was valid for no more than a year.
In February 2004, Castaneda Negrete was convicted of first-degree burglary and unlawful restraint, officials said. During a hearing in New Britain Superior Court, he was sentenced to six years in prison, suspended after service of nine months, according to officials.
Castaneda Negrete was deported to Peru in March 2012, authorities said.
In November 2024, Castaneda Negrete was arrested by the Hartford Police Department and charged with second-degree sexual assault, according to officials.
The federal case brought against Castaneda Negrete was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and was part of “Operation Take Back America,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
