One person is dead following a fire at an elderly apartment complex in Clinton on Monday.

Crews responded to the Lafayette Green Building 1 at 10:25 a.m. when an occupant called 911 and reported a smoke detector going off and the smell of smoke, according to Brian Manware, chief of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department.

Multiple 911 calls then came in reporting visible smoke and flames coming from a second-story window, Manware said. Crews were at the scene within three minutes and confirmed that a second floor apartment was burning.

Firefighters stretched a single hose line into the apartment, Manware said. They encountered high heat and zero visibility because of the smoke.

The occupant of the unit was found in a hallway and was rescued by firefighters, according to Manware. The victim was taken in an ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious injuries. Manware said the individual later died from their injuries.

The victim has not been identified.

The occupants from the three other apartments in the building were not injured but were displaced, Manware said. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

According to Manware, no firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Clinton Fire Marshal’s Office, the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit and the Clinton Police Department.

Crews received mutual aid from the Old Saybrook, Westbrook and Guilford Fire Departments, as well as the Madison Hose Co. No. 1 and Madison EMS.
