EAST PEORIA, Ill. – A fatal accident has occurred, resulting in the closure of Interstate 74 near Pinecrest this Friday morning. According to the East Peoria Fire Department, the crash involved a semi-truck and an SUV, with each vehicle carrying one person.
The tragic incident occurred when the SUV, traveling westbound, crossed the median and entered the eastbound lanes, colliding head-on with the semi-truck. Unfortunately, the driver of the SUV did not survive the crash. Officials have confirmed one fatality and the road remains shut down as the investigation into the accident continues.
Additionally, a separate rollover accident in Tazewell County has caused significant disruptions on I-74 eastbound. This incident involved a semi-truck and another vehicle, which reportedly rolled over and caught fire. Traffic is being rerouted at the East Washington Street exit in East Peoria to manage the congestion and ensure safety.
Vehicles stuck between Washington Street and the accident site are being turned around and redirected into the westbound right lane. The closure is expected to last for an extended period as emergency responders and investigators work on the scene.
