Rantoul Man Killed In Domestic Dispute, Suspect Arraigned For Murder: A tragic domestic dispute in Rantoul has left a 28-year-old man dead. On May 26, at approximately 2:22 a.m., the Rantoul Police Department responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 700 block of East Sangamon Avenue. While officers were en route, multiple calls were received through METCAD reporting a possible fight inside the residence, with at least one caller indicating that a person had been shot.
Upon arrival, officers found a male subject, later identified as Robert McKinney Jr., unresponsive on the floor. He was quickly transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators later interviewed Robert McKinney Sr., who disclosed that a physical struggle had occurred between him and his son, Robert McKinney Jr. During the altercation, a firearm was discharged, striking Robert McKinney Jr.
Robert McKinney Sr. was also taken to a local hospital, where he received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. After being medically evaluated, McKinney Sr. was arrested and transported to the Champaign County Jail. He is currently being held on charges of murder.
