Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump were not at the property at the time, staying at the White House in Washington, D.C.
Authorities confirmed no law enforcement personnel were injured during the encounter.
Confrontation and Response
According to the U.S. Secret Service, the man carried what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can when he approached the north gate of the Mar-a-Lago property.
Agents from the Secret Service and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputy confronted him, and shots were fired. The gunman was killed on the scene.
Officials emphasized that no protectees were present during the incident.
Investigation Underway
The FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and PBSO are investigating the circumstances, including the gunman’s background, actions, and potential motive.
Secret Service personnel involved have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome. The identity of the gunman is being withheld until next-of-kin are notified.
Context of Previous Threats
This incident adds to a pattern of security threats faced by Trump over the years.
In July 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks allegedly attempted to shoot Trump during a campaign rally. Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper, and Trump sustained a gunshot wound to his upper right ear.
Later in 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh was arrested at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club while allegedly preparing to shoot him. Routh fled after being fired upon without causing harm and was recently sentenced to life plus 84 months in federal prison.
Why It Matters
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by high-profile political figures. It underscores the vigilance required from law enforcement to protect public officials and their residences.
Even when the primary targets are absent, threats can escalate quickly, reminding the public of the constant balance between security and daily life for prominent figures.
