A Sunday night shooting in Saginaw turned deadly for a 47-year-old woman named Kenya Collins.
According to Michigan State Police, a 63-year-old man shot her at a residence on Cathay Street before fleeing the scene around 9:30 pm.
The suspect took the victim with him, and a later confrontation with police led to a separate officer-involved shooting.
Police located the suspect’s car soon after near Buena Vista Township.
The 63-year-old man then rammed a police vehicle and engaged in a shootout with officers.
Fortunately, he was apprehended at the scene and taken to Saginaw County Jail. Formal charges are pending.
Medics transported the 47-year-old woman to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police withheld details about what led to the shooting. Luckily, neither the officer nor the suspect was injured during their exchange of gunfire.
Police haven’t released the suspect’s name yet since he hasn’t had his first court appearance (arraignment).
To ensure a fair investigation, a specialized Michigan State Police team from Lansing will take the lead in examining the officer-involved shooting.
