The Southington Fire Department rescued two lost hikers from Ragged Mountain in Southington on Saturday night

The fire department was dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. to GPS coordinates to assist in locating the hikers.

The department’s shift commander established a unified command at Carey Street in Southington as “crews reached the hikers after approximately a 1.5-mile trek through 4-foot snow drifts and extremely steep terrain,” according to the Southington Fire Department’s report on social media.

Both hikers were treated for hypothermia and one of the hikers was also experiencing a diabetic emergency. Firefighters built a warming fire “which significantly improved both patients’ conditions.”

The hikers were rescued to Andrews Street at about 9:30 p.m.

Mount Southington Ski Area provided a snowmobile “that proved critical to the successful rescue,” according to the Southington Fire Department.

The Southington Fire Department said that mutual aid assisted with manpower, specialty equipment, rope rescue operations and patient packaging for removal from the woods.

Berlin Volunteer Fire Department, East Berlin Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., Kensington Fire-Rescue, South Kensington Volunteer Fire Department Avon Volunteer Fire Department, and Rocky Hill Fire Department all assisted on scene.

Other resources were provided by CT Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue, multiple American Medical Response ambulances, and Hartford County Fire Coordinators.
