State police have accused a man of causing a crash on Route 2 in North Stonington last May, seriously injuring a 74-year-old woman, before fleeing the scene.
Gregory White, 43, of North Stonington was arrested Tuesday on a warrant charging him with second-degree assault involving a serious physical injury, evading responsibility, reckless driving, failure to drive in the proper lane and first-degree reckless endangerment, according to Connecticut State Police.
He turned himself in at the Troop E barracks in Montville, state police said.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the charges stem from a two-vehicle crash reported on May 2, 2025, just after 7:15 p.m. State troopers responded to the scene and found that a 1996 Dodge Ram, which was owned by White, had been involved in a collision with a 2024 Nissan Altima.
The front seat passenger in the Altima, a 74-year-old woman, was “semiconscious” and was trapped in the vehicle, the warrant affidavit said. She and the driver were extricated by firefighters.
The woman was then taken Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. According to the warrant affidavit, state police found that the victim was still in the Intensive Care Unit five days after the crash.
The driver of the Altima told police his chest was bruised from his seatbelt, according to the warrant affidavit. He said he accompanied the woman to the hospital, riding in the passenger seat of the ambulance.
State police allege White left the scene on foot.
Troopers found that White’s vehicle was being driven east on Route 2 when it suddenly accelerated and headed into the shoulder and a grass area off the road, the warrant affidavit said. State police believe the pickup truck struck part of a water catch basin and began spinning counterclockwise out of control, according to the warrant affidavit.
The Ram spun back onto the road and toward the Altima as it was being driven west on Route 2, state police said. The passenger side of the Ram struck the front end of the Altima, according to the warrant affidavit.
Troopers were able to see portions of the crash on video surveillance taken from a restaurant.
After the crash, two employees of a different restaurant in the area went outside to check on those who were involved and reported seeing a bald man with a gash across his head walking in the area of the truck, the warrant affidavit said. One of them offered him water and a chair to sit in, but both employees said the man walked away from the area just as the first trooper arrived at the scene.
Finding that the Ram was registered to White, state police went to his home and did not find him there, the warrant affidavit said. They also used blood hounds and a drone unit in an attempt to find him in the area of the crash.
Troopers were able to ping the location of White’s cell phone, but they found that he had left it in the Ram, according to the warrant affidavit.
Shortly after 5 a.m. the next day, state police received a call from someone who reported that White had shown up to their North Stonington home suffering from injuries, the warrant affidavit said. Troopers responded to the residence and found White, who said he had a “busted” rib and a concussion, state police wrote in the affidavit.
White allegedly told troopers he had been driving his “project truck” the previous day when it “got away from” him, the warrant affidavit said. He said he remembered walking afterward until he arrived at a friend’s home, according to the warrant affidavit. He told police he could not remember if he had walked around all night.
White is free on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Feb. 23.
