On May 18, 2024, at approximately 6:25 PM, Clinton County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to South Wacousta Road near Corrison Road in Watertown Township following a report of a vehicle striking a group of pedestrians walking on the shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle fled the scene but was later intercepted by deputies several miles away.
The driver, a 35-year-old woman from the Perrinton area, was arrested and is currently in custody at the Clinton County Jail.
Tragically, two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene. Thirteen others, ranging in age from toddlers to senior citizens, sustained injuries varying from life-threatening to minor and were transported to nearby hospitals.
The response to the incident was extensive, with assistance from multiple agencies including Dewitt Township Police, Dewitt City Police, Bath Township Police, Michigan State Police, Delta Fire Department, Lansing Fire Department, Lansing Township Fire, Mercy Ambulance, Clinton Area Ambulance, Grand Ledge Ambulance, Portland Ambulance, the Clinton County Road Commission, Clinton County Victim Support, Clinton County Emergency Management, and Clinton County Central Dispatch.
Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
