Born on April 5, 1970, in Springfield, Illinois, James developed a passion for sports and education early in life. After graduating from Springfield High School, where he was a standout athlete, he attended Illinois State University, earning a degree in Education. James returned to Springfield to pursue his dual passions: teaching and coaching.
For over 25 years, James served as a beloved teacher and basketball coach at Springfield High School. His teaching extended beyond the classroom, as he imparted not only academic knowledge but also life lessons to his students. James’s classroom was a place where students felt encouraged and inspired, his teaching methods fostering both intellectual and personal growth.
As a basketball coach, James led his teams with a commitment to excellence and a deep understanding of the game. His coaching style emphasized teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Under his guidance, the Springfield High School basketball team achieved numerous championships, creating a legacy of success that will be remembered for generations. James’s influence extended far beyond the court, as he mentored countless young athletes, helping them to realize their full potential both on and off the court.

A celebration of James Alsup’s life will be held on May 25, 2023, at Springfield High School’s gymnasium. Friends, family, and the community will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable impact he had on their lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Springfield High School Athletic Department, in memory of James, to continue supporting the programs he was so passionate about.
