Virgil Paynter Obituary – A tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning in Wyoming County, West Virginia, resulting in the death of a coal miner. The miner has been identified as Virgil Paynter of Lynco, according to the West Virginia Governor Jim Justice’s Office. Paynter was operating an excavator at CM Energy Operations LP Surface Mine when he sustained fatal injuries.
Governor Justice expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of another remarkable West Virginia hero. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the invaluable service of miners across the state and the nation. Their tireless efforts power our homes, contribute to the steel industry, and support our communities. The governor and his wife, Cathy, extended their prayers to Paynter’s family and urged others to join them in offering support.
Regrettably, this incident marks the first coal mining fatality in West Virginia in 2024. Governor Justice assured that the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training, along with the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are actively investigating the incident at the mine site.
