The collision occurred at 5:42 p.m., five miles south of Beresford, South Dakota, on Saturday afternoon. Gene J. Eli was riding a 2004 Kawasaki VN750 motorcycle southbound on Interstate 29 when, for unknown reasons, the motorcycle swerved off the left side of the road and into the median. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle when it hit the median, suffering significant injuries. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Eli succumbed to his injuries.

Additionally, he is survived by two great-grandchildren.
