It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of QPR legend, Frank Sibley, who left an indelible mark on the football world. Sibley, who valiantly battled Parkinson’s disease since 2004, passed away on Friday at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by fans and colleagues alike.
Sibley’s journey with Queens Park Rangers began at the tender age of 15 when he made his debut for the club. Over the course of his illustrious career, he proudly donned the blue and white jersey 168 times, etching his name into the annals of the club’s history.
A pivotal figure in QPR’s storied past, Sibley was a vital cog in the wheel of the team’s double-winning side of 1967, which clinched both the Third Division title and the prestigious League Cup. However, his playing career was tragically cut short at the age of 23 due to injury, prompting a transition into coaching under the guidance of Gordon Jago.
Despite his premature retirement as a player, Sibley’s passion for the game remained undiminished. He seamlessly transitioned into coaching, serving as Dave Sexton’s trusted assistant before assuming the mantle of manager himself at the remarkably young age of 29 in 1977.
During his tenure as manager, Sibley’s tactical acumen and leadership qualities shone through, leaving an indelible impression on the club and its supporters. Though his managerial stint lasted only a year, his influence continued to resonate within the QPR community for decades to come.
Sibley’s enduring connection with Queens Park Rangers saw him return to Loftus Road in various coaching capacities, including caretaker manager, in the late 1980s. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in Gerry Francis’s coaching setup during the 1990s, further cementing his status as a revered figure within the club.
As we bid farewell to a true footballing icon, the legacy of Frank Sibley will endure through the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the indelible mark he left on Queens Park Rangers and the wider footballing community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time, and may his spirit continue to inspire generations of football enthusiasts for years to come.
