In solemn remembrance, we bid farewell to Gerald Lee Yates, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who departed this life on April 27, 2024, at his residence in Dexter, Missouri. Born on November 29, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri, Gerald leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and unwavering kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him.
A dedicated patriot, Gerald served his country with distinction, retiring from the United States Army after twenty-four years of faithful service. His commitment to duty and honour reflected his deep-seated values and earned him the respect of his colleagues and community alike.
Gerald was a cherished member of the Word of Faith Church in Bernie, where his faith guided his actions and his presence brought comfort to those around him. Beyond his military service and church involvement, Gerald was known for his diligent work ethic and diverse interests. Whether tending to his flower gardens, tackling odd jobs, or showcasing his talent in woodworking, Gerald approached every task with enthusiasm and skill.
Yet, it was in the simple joys of life that Gerald found his greatest fulfilment. A sociable soul, he never met a stranger and delighted in engaging in meaningful conversations with everyone he encountered. However, his greatest joy came from the time spent with his family—his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—who brought immeasurable happiness to his life.
On August 17, 1968, Gerald embarked on a journey of love and companionship when he married the love of his life, Charlotte Ann Gromer. Together, they shared countless cherished moments until Charlotte’s passing on December 14, 2010. Gerald’s enduring love for Charlotte serves as a testament to the depth of his character and the strength of their bond.
Gerald is survived by his loving daughters, Terri Pettypool and Connie Allen, along with their respective spouses, Jim Pettypool and Derrick Allen. His legacy lives on through his adoring grandchildren, Cameron Yates, Kelci Meekie, and Cora Allen, as well as his six great-grandchildren, Camden, Asher, Annslee, Rowan, Lakeland, and Skylah.
While we mourn Gerald’s passing, we take solace in the cherished memories he leaves behind. His warm smile, gentle spirit, and generous heart will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who were privileged to know him.
Visitation to honour Gerald’s memory will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, Missouri. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Mathis Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Dale Hartle. Gerald will be laid to rest with full military honours at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, Missouri.
In this time of sorrow, let us come together to celebrate the life of Gerald Lee Yates—a remarkable man whose legacy of love and service will continue to inspire us all.
