More than a dozen people were displaced following a fire at a three-family home in West Hartford on Tuesday.

Crews responded to the residence at 17 Mitchell Place just before 11:15 a.m. on the report of a fire on the second floor with multiple people inside saying they could see smoke, according to James Silver, assistant chief of the West Hartford Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found smoke showing on the side of the home and fire on the second story, Silver said. Everyone who was inside had made it out safely before crews arrived.

The fire prompted a response from all West Hartford firefighters as well as crews from the UConn Fire Department. The flames extended to portions of the second and third floors as well as the attic, according to Silver.

Firefighters used multiple handlines to put the fire out, Silver said. The bulk of the fire was out by 11:26 a.m., he said.

Crews performed “significant overhaul” for about an hour more due to the extent and location of the fire, according to Silver.

No injuries were reported.

The building was still being evaluated by the town’s Building Department in the afternoon hours, according to Silver. Officials were preparing to have to assist as many as 13 occupants with housing needs.

Those assisting would include the American Red Cross, the West Hartford Office of Emergency Management, CERT Team members and the town’s Medical Resiliency Coordinator.

According to Silver, crews from fire departments in Hartford, Newington and New Britain provided station coverage while firefighters were at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.

“As always, West Hartford fire greatly appreciates the assistance of the West Hartford police, dispatchers, AMR and our other mutual aid partners from area fire departments,” Silver said in a statement.
