Joseph McKinney Obituary – In Tennessee, a tragic incident occurred early Friday where a police officer and an 18-year-old suspect lost their lives in a shootout.
Two other officers and a 17-year-old were also injured during the exchange of gunfire. The incident began when Memphis officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at around 2 a.m.
According to interim Police Director CJ Davis, as the officers approached the vehicle, the occupants opened fire on them, leading the officers to return fire. As a result, three officers and two suspects were wounded.
The suspect who initiated the gunfire fled the scene, but the police pursued the vehicle until it came to a stop a few blocks away. One suspect was immediately apprehended, while the second suspect was found nearby.
Tragically, Officer Joseph McKinney, who was struck by gunfire, succumbed to his injuries. Another officer was transported to the hospital, where his condition was upgraded to non-critical. A third officer, who was grazed by gunfire, received treatment at the scene.
Both suspects, an 18-year-old who was driving the vehicle and a 17-year-old, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old suspect passed away at the hospital, as confirmed by Davis.
The motive behind the call reporting the suspicious vehicle remains unknown at this time, according to Davis. The Memphis Police Department is deeply saddened by this incident, and Davis expressed her grief as well.
She emphasized the need to address the issue of gun violence in the community, stating that such senseless deaths must come to an end. Authorities have contacted prosecutors, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
