The New Haven Museum is holding a free celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this month.
A “family friendly” celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. will be held at the New Haven Museum on Jan. 17 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., according to museum officials. The theme of the MLK Day at New Haven Museum will be King’s acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
The event will include viewings of Dr. King’s Nobel acceptance speech, and participation in creating a colorful community mobile inspired by the speech. A mixed-media mobile is a hanging sculpture that combines various materials to create a dynamic piece that moves and sways, often incorporating elements like collage or assemblage. Participants will be able to add to the mobile with their own thoughts and artworks.
“Families and friends will gather in the Clement Room to make their own contributions to a fun, mixed-media mobile using assorted materials, and supplies generously donated by EcoWorks, a local recycling shop that promotes the use of surplus materials for art, craft, and education,” the museum said.
There will also be a reading nook with 10 MLK-related books from New Haven Free Public Library, and a coloring corner with coloring pages relating to Dr. King’s quotes for younger participants, according to the museum.
