A woman is dead and a young child is now without a mother after what police are calling a domestic violence incident.
According to East Haven Police, officers were dispatched to 32 Old Foxon Road Tuesday morning around 8:10 a.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a man attacking a woman in the hallway of an apartment building. Police on scene encountered a man, later identified as Tyreek Black, 21, in the doorway of an apartment and saw a large knife in the hallway nearby. The man reportedly retreated into an apartment, where he locked the door and barricaded himself inside.
Officers’ initial attempts to deescalate the situation and get Black to open the door were unsuccessful, police said. Additional officers went around to a side window, smashed it open and lifted through a young child, who was not injured, police said.
Eventually, Black opened the door to police and became combative as they took him into custody. In the apartment officers found a female victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. She was treated on scene by East Haven Fire Department medics and immediately taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she died of her injuries, police said.
Black is charged with murder, assault on police, interfering with police, interfering with an emergency call and risk of injury to a minor. He was held in lieu of $2 million bail for a court arraignment Wednesday.
“This is a sad and unnecessary loss for our community. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, loved ones and especially her young child affected by this terrible act,” Mayor Joseph A. Carfora said in a statement.
The East Haven Police Investigative Services Division with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Central District and New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office have taken over the investigation.
“This incident has left a family grieving and a child facing a future shaped by unimaginable loss. Our hearts break for the victim’s family, friends, and those that were close to her,” East Haven Police said.
