A man with an extensive criminal history is facing a murder charge in connection with an altercation involving multiple people left one man dead in Waterbury on Saturday.

Kendren Barnes, 47, of Waterbury was identified as one of the individuals allegedly involved in a physical disturbance at an apartment complex at 144 Grove St. on Saturday that left one man dead, according to Sgt. Joseph Morais of the Waterbury Police Department.

Barnes was taken into custody on Monday and charged with murder, Morais said. He is currently being held on a $2.5 million bond.

According to Morais, officers responded to the apartment complex around 7:17 p.m. on Saturday for reports of a physical altercation involving a weapon.

Arriving officers located two men at the scene who sustained wounds that “were indicative of being inflicted by an edged weapon,” Morais said.

Both men were transported to local hospitals where one of the victims was later pronounced dead, according to Morais.

Morais said police believed the incident appeared to be “an isolated event between several individuals,” and there were no active threats to the public or residents of the building.

According to Morais, Barnes has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1995 that includes multiple convictions for robbery and larceny.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked contact the Waterbury Police Detective Bureau at 203-574-6941 or call the anonymous Crime Stoppers tip line at 203-755-1234.
